Many schools are currently deep in discussion about the best order to teach the three maths units and when to enter pupils for each exam. The truth is — there’s no single “right” way to do it.
That said, it’s easy to get caught in endless deliberation. Before you know it, valuable planning and preparation time has slipped away. The key is to make a decision for your first cohort and move forward with confidence. You can always refine your approach in future years as you become more familiar with the course structure and what works best for your students.
One suggested route is:
- Unit 2: Sit at the end of Year 10, with the option for resits in November of Year 11.
- Units 1 and 3: Sit at the end of Year 11, giving students the maximum teaching and revision time.
This approach allows pupils to build confidence gradually and ensures they’re well-prepared for their final assessments.
Whatever path you choose, the most important thing is to decide now. Trust your professional judgement — and remember, flexibility is part of the process.
